Ups and downs of the Oscar nominations

Jan 15, 2015 23:28

Ordinarily, this is the time of year when I complain about all the films, actors, or technicians who didn’t get Oscar nominations. I’m usually arguing out of ardor more than knowledge, though; until this year I hadn't really gone to the movies a lot since the early 90s, and have watched things as they came out on DVD. Since the industry likes to ( Read more... )

"Under The Skin" had a noteworthy score? I can barely even remember it having background music... :S

"Lego Movie" not being nominated really IS weird isn't it? I wonder whether that live action bit towards the end had something to do with it...

What do you mean "at least 'Everything Is Awesome' was nominated? That's a frikkin' TERRIBLE song! I'd rather they nominated the Batman song, "Darkness! No Parents!" ;)

I'm not surprised that "Snowpiercer" isn't getting nominations. Most people haven't seen it. They barely released it anywhere. I made a point of buying the region one DVD because I wanted a decent quality copy of my own, but it's still not been released here in the UK.

Oh, yeah. Next time you watch Under the Skin listen for it. It's really, really creepy and amazing.

I really disliked the live-action bit, too. That's what kept it out of my top ten. Just a bad, bad misstep all 'round, especially if that really was what kept it from the nomination.

Snowpiercer didn't get as much of an audience as I would have liked, but it still played for about a month here. I'd be willing to bet that more people saw it than saw films like Princess Kaguya or Still Alice (which only got a limited release specifically so as to qualify for the Oscars, but still hasn't had its wide release). I wonder if it and Under the Skin aren't just too weird and brutal for the Academy.

Oh, you know you love it! Come on, sing it with me! "Everything is Awesome!!! Everything is cool when you're part of a team!!!"

I'm not likely to be watching "Under The Skin" again. I'm afraid I really wasn't a fan. It's annoying when I really dislike films that friends love. There's one close friend who I like to talk to about films and share my scores, but whenever "Cloud Atlas" comes up it can feel a teensy bit awkward ( ... )

Well, I did write an earlier post about my top ten of the year, but if you want the top 25, I've got all the 2014 films I've seen ranked at Letterboxd. It's pretty fluid, because I keep seeing more movies or re-watching the ones I've already seen and moving things around. My top ten is already slightly different than it was when I wrote that post.
