I am very pleased. I just finished my first complete online chess game, and I am victorious!
I say “complete” because kickboygerlachand I have tried to play twice, both times playing correspondence games where each of us would move once a day. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the problem with having 24 hours to make your move is that you still have to make a move ( Read more... )

Yay for your victory! It'd be cool if you would teach me about chess next time we're around one another. Do you think you have the patience for that? And do you think I should try to teach myself in advance by a book?

There are many excellent books out there, even for beginners. I recommend also going to the site and joining up; they have tutorials for beginning players (they set you up in a position and let you find the best move) as well as for veterans.
As far as patience goes, yeah. I taught my friend Shannon to play, and she eventually got to be pretty good. If we could have continued playing she would have become better than me, I think. I guess it depends on how quickly you learn. And since we can communicate to each other while we're playing, we could do this on the site as well as in person, also.
