...in which I've been living a lie for something like 24 years.

Well, now, this is an interesting story, although it's possible that no one else will think it's as neat as I do:
You know how some people are able to anticipate the zeitgeist, to predict what’s gonna become popular and important before other people can? Well, one such man is Fred L. Worth of Sacramento. He saw the whole trivia craze coming before ( Read more... )

We wanted to know MacGyver's first name. I think I remember it was Gus.

Believe it or not, I've never seen MacGyver, but I'm aware of the cultural reference.
So, it could be Gus, like the mouse in Cinderella? 'Cause that would be super cool and maybe appropriate, actually. "We can do it we can do it we can help our Cinderelly; we can make explosives out of toilet cleaner and old incense."

That is interesting trivia itself. Oh, and I have a friend who named his dog Jahya after that song.

A fine song, though atypical of them. Incidentally, how dows your friend pronounce that? And yes, I agree, good trivia.

I don't know how to make overscores and the like here. Ji-yah with a long i. Somewhat like hi-ya as a greeting. Yeah, a lot like that. Except that greeting never bit my head. Otherwise they're pretty much the same.

Yeah, that's basically how I pronounce it, though I pronounce the "H" as well, so it's kinda like "jai-gh-ya." I have no reason to believe that's correct, though. I think it might be just that, when that album (The Process) came out, I had a lot of Arab friends, and I couldn't ignore that damned h. No reason to assume that Ogre had Arab friends influencing his pronunciation, though.

Oh, I hate when there's a reference I don't get, but I don't get that one. I've never seen Wings of Desire. Gimme a story?

Columbo, priests, etc. babs827 June 5 2007, 20:29:44 UTC
Really neat, Son. (Although, of course, I disagree with the bit about priests.) Also, by way of personalizing (which, as you know, I am driven to do), I am pretty sure that I never lied about Santa Claus and told you I believed in creationism, while there were other opinions about that -- both conversations were held when you were 4. So, I'm hoping I didn't lie too much.

PS plenty of smart people also believe in the authority of scripture, and they're not the types to lie. I'm not talking about Jerry Falwell types. I'm talking about N. T. Wright types. And your pop. And me. Scripture also contains a compelling story -- if story is what is important.

OK, enough of that.

PS I hope I posted this in the right place.

A comment about parents doesn't necessarily have to refer to my own parents. That statement referred to "people," not specifically to me.
I assumed that you taught me the whole creation story as an allegory of some sort (though of course, at the time, I believed you were telling the literal truth). It had not occurred to me that you might have believed it yourself.
