Huh, I thought Mass Effect hadn't done very well in Japan. Even as a Japan/US co-production, it seems like an odd move.

They may be looking to play off of Madhouse's somewhat successful collaboration with Marvel, which has lasted them 4 seasons by now. That's the only thing I can think of that would really spawn it.
