So I completed Fallout: New Vegas, and managed to do some amusing things to the endgame in the process as I got more and more lackadaisical.

Considerably better than basic Fallout 3 for my money. There's still a lot of empty areas of the world but there is, in general, more to do and more to discover, especially in the sidequest stakes. It also refreshes the 'pilgrimage' idea of Fallout 2, where you are roughly told to follow a certain path and that way it can plan events along that path.
