Title: Father
Fandom: Lamento - Beyond the Void
Rating: G
Disclaimer: I don't own it.
Warnings: Um, possible spoilers for Asato's route?
Notes: I don't have much background info on Kaltz, seeing how I can't read much Japanese. What I know is what you kind people told me, and I tried to work with that to the best of my ability. Many apologies. *bows*

Father

He is a father.

Kaltz remembers the thought from when it still was, 'He is going to be a father', and what he feels now is comparable to what he felt then, gaping incredulity along with a wild spike of something that may have been joy, once upon a time. And so, with this knowledge throwing his heart into chaos, he cannot help but stray from his intended task.

He is a devil. He craves power. The cursed kitten has power.

Yet the part of him that knows what it was like to hope for a family, that remembers having his only happiness ripped away from him so cruelly, craves to see his son more. Helplessly, hopelessly, he finds his watchful gaze shifting from his competitors and their common prey, to the young man his son has become without his knowing. As time passes, the reality of the young man is slowly beginning to replace the image in his mind's eye, of the tiny kitten he never got to hold, and as if to torture himself, he keeps catching glimpses of his dead beloved in his son's mannerisms. A smile, a pose, a certain way he moves or breathes or speaks brings her back to life for fractions of seconds, and in these moments, Kaltz finds it the hardest to stay silent, to stay away.

But he does not want to know what sorrow looks like on his son's face, when a devil reveals himself as the immortal coward who did not manage to save him and his mother, to spare them a lifetime of mistreatment and grief.

Once, just once, he allows the pain of his loss to get the better of him, and travels the shadows to his son's room late at night. A few hours of keeping vigil will assuage his most irrational fears, if nothing else. But as he steps from the waning shadows, he notices that the place of dream keeper has already been taken by another. His son is sharing the cursed kitten's bed, both curled so tightly around each other that it is difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.

For a moment, he feels like he is witnessing a scene from another time, where another self used to hold his beloved so tightly, both afraid to see the first colors of dawn appear in the sky.

The image shatters as Asato shifts, nosing around until he finds a more comfortable spot against the other's neck, and settles back into deeper sleep, a sweetly contented smile spreading across his face.

For a moment, Kaltz stays perfectly still, taking in the scene before him. That is not the picture of two people afraid for their love. His son is wearing the smile of a man with hope for tomorrow. And just like that, he knows what he will do.

He needs power. The cursed kitten has power. The cursed kitten has power, and Asato loves him. And Kaltz will never do anything to hurt his son.

He may be a devil, but he will always be a father first.

---------

A/N: It seems there's now a permanent batch of present tense-bunnies. Far be it from me to question their preferences.

I am aware that there's no way in hell (no pun intended) that I did Kaltz's character justice. I'm very sorry about it, too. Still, C&C of any kind would be lovely, since it's always a massive help.
