It looks like I've tilted before, in a tournament.  I unhorsed a Sir Voelden when he tried to run me through.  [She knows that everything she learned there is connected to pieces of her past - that, or the Ordeal is making her feel that way - ( Read more... )

Well, I've seen your writing before. Mine has to be easy enough. [Because she uses a brush and ink, and her writing is fairly elegant.]

What is tilting?

I do not know if I have used a lance, but weapons seem familiar. And I will remember to call you Mindelan in the future!

It's a kind of martial game done in tournaments. Two people mounted on warhorses try to unhorse each other by riding at each other and driving the lance into the other's shield.

Thank you. Who are you?

I see. I do not know if I have heard of it before, but it sounds very interesting!

I am Youth!

A Mindelan? Is that a title or a family name? It does sound nice.

So you were jousting?

It's where I'm from. My family's holdings. [Which, Min supposes, makes her a noble or an upper-crust merchant. Huh.]

I was. It's not what I imagined myself doing, but...

Your family name is the same as the name of your lands? [tapping of the pen, and the following is neatly marked out after half a minute.] Were you nobility or just landowners?

Oh! And I'm good at using a spear on foot, but I've never tried to do fight on a chocobo or a horse. I don't think I've ever used one of those special jousting lances either, though I've seen it before.

I don't think I have a family name. I am of Mindelan, and anyone in my part of the family must be too. [She has to consider for a bit.] I'm not sure that there's much of a difference.

Lances seem fairly cumbersome. They have to be good at something outside of tournaments, though. [She doesn't want to think that she learned any weapon just for showing off.]

Sounds like an interesting pastime. Nice to meet you, Mindelan; I'm Lea. I don't believe we've written before, but tilting--or jousting, or whichever it's called--sounds like kind of an unusual hobby, especially for a girl. [He doesn't know for certain if she's female, as they've never met, but he can't imagine a boy naming himself Peachblossom...] So you're a knight or something?

Well met.

I suppose they're exhibitions of skill. [She doesn't say anything about the "especially for a girl" part, not knowing he's fishing for what gender she is.] We can't have been the only combatants there, I hope.

A what? [The word just blurs and becomes something that she's pretty sure isn't right.]

[LOL, he didn't mean to sound offensive--it is a bit odd for a girl to joust.]

A knight--you know, armor, on horseback, rescuing damsels in distress, fighting the good fight, protecting the king, that sort of stuff? I don't know a whole lot about it, but it sounds about right.

A - dei? That can't be right.

[Pause, sigh.]

If it doesn't want me to know the word, I'm not going to be able to know the word.

You mean a spear from horseback? That seems somehow familiar.

Good for you on the name. And I'm [pause] called Hawk, since I don't think I've yet had the honour.

Not quite a spear - lances are longer than those tend to be.

Thank you, Hawk.

Right. But the design is similar? I reckon I'd rather use a long pike on foot against a horseman, if I was so inclined.
