We, Reborn - A Mixtape from Sam Winchester
On Castiel's first birthday, Sam hands him a small package wrapped in brown paper.
"It's nothing much," he says as Castiel turns it over in his hands, examining it as though the paper itself is part of the present, part to be savoured. "I just thought, y'know, if we're getting you all the people things you should have some music to call your own."
Castiel peels the paper off gently, each piece of tape one at a time. It's frustrating, but he's this careful with everything. Then he has the CD in his hands, his eyes scanning the track list.
Sam knows Castiel has no idea about the music, no idea who the bands are, no idea how he's supposed to feel, but there is something in his expression that tells him his friend knows there is meaning behind this. That Sam has taken time to pick these songs just for him.
"Thank you, Sam," he nods, looking up finally. "I'll keep it forever."
Sam chuckles, because it's a big thing to say. "Just give it a listen when you get the time," he grins, patting Cas on the shoulder.

Sam doesn't assume that Castiel will understand what he hears when he does listen to it. He doesn't think Castiel will listen to the words of the songs and think of a certain someone. But he hopes. He hopes that it sews the seeds in Castiel's mind, that he'll turn his head and look and wonder if the words are trying to tell him something.
Sam wants them to be happy. If the world ends he wants them to have each other. If the world doesn't end he wants them to go on together. So very few things are constant these days and Heavens knows he and Dean haven't had the best of luck when it comes to people sticking around. But they have Cas-
