I'm shocked, but I know I shouldn't be, but I am.

I've asked like 10 people I work with if they've ever read Lolita by Nabokov.  1/2 said what is it, a couple said they saw the movie and the rest gave me blank stares as though they had no idea what a book was.

The only other person who's read the book left me saying that it was recommended on the Oprah show, I searched Lolita on the Oprah website ( Read more... )

I think every Christian should read The Muslim Jesus.

I have read none on that list (saw Waiting for Godot the play), although I have read other Nabokov and Eliot works.

My "Classic Literature" score is woefully low.

Bad you... I love the written word, so when I find something that makes me want to read it outloud I do.

But, I usually hate "classic literature". You'll never see the House of the Seven Gables in my hands.

I think the man who selected these books is an ass. I've read Godot and the TS Eliot, but I by no means think they are in the 5 Must-Read books of all time.

Heh - the only book on that list that I've read is Waiting for Godot (and I've seen the play, and performed in part of it). I think it's an excellent example of Theatre of the Absurd - probably the best in that genre. Of course, I was a theatre major, so that may be part of it.

I wrote a paper once, comparing the 'externalness' of the the 'waiting' in the play, versus the 'internalness' of the psychosis in Crime and Punishment for a college level entrance exam. But I digress ...

Heh - I've never read Lolita, but I should (in my copious amounts of free time).

In my Senior year of high school, we read a lot of interesting books, I thought: portions of Beowulf, followed by Grendel (very good book, btw). We also read Hamlet, the Scottish play, and King Lear, as well as Candide and Crime and Punishment. Then we got more modern - Ibsen, Beckett, Faulkner (I've only read As I Lay Dying, and Red says I should read Sound and the Fury), and ... hmmm - those are the books I remember reading, anyway, and since I still remember the major ( ... )
