Live, From Pittsburgh PA!

I am in Pittsburgh, ensconced in a hotel close to the Pitt campus. I arrived yesterday after an uneventful but oddly interminable drive during which the Prius only got 40 MPG. Yeah, I know; they do better in stop-and-go driving than highway, and it's uphill all the way from the shores of prodigious Lake Ontario to the banks of the mighty ( Read more... )

Pittsburgh driving is... interesting. I don't think I have ever once been able to successfully leave Pittsburgh without having to pull over and (horror!) consult a map. The exits are horribly marked, the streets seem to merge into one big knot, and... well, yeah. You've discovered that.

I highly recommend The National Aviary if you're looking for something to do. They even have a Hyacinth Macaw!

Oh, cool. I'll see if she's interested; I'd LOVE it. And the Aviary web site posts bus routes, too, so I don't have to drive.

Two things about Prii and highway mileage: yeah, going uphill will kill you (just as with any other car), and *speed*. How fast were you going? Air resistance builds quickly with increasing speed; I find that mileage is quite decent at a pokey 60 (better than my city mileage, in fact -- yet more proof that the EPA's mileage testing profiles suck), and drops off *fast* above 70. You don't want to know how bad it is at 90.

Does Laura know she's your Baby Monkey?

I was doing between 70 and 75 most of the way. Close to 80 for a short while when I was surrounded by cars that apparently were fleeing the police or something; I was doing 80 and they were blowing past me like I was parked. But I was pretty sedate most of the way. If 70 - 75 can be termed sedate.

And yes, she knows, and now her friends on her floor in her dorm know too, because I outed her, with her permission. And it's actually Baby Monkey Head, if you want to get technical.

And Stevie is my Baby Lamb, and her partner is my Lamb-In-Law.

Don't even ask about nicknames in my family. I'll have to google up a Usenet post from years ago about nicknames.
