I don't really hate those of you with perfect pitch, I'm just jealous of it right now.

For a fleeting moment I knew what key my tinnitus[1] is in and bolted out into the living room to grab one of the electronic keyboards and a set of headphones to confirm it. Unfortunately Vogon was asleep and Laurel was watching TV, and its horizontal scan rate noise throws my perception. I am ready to unplug that irritation box. Vogon assures me ( Read more... )

I do not, although I own a copy of that book. I'm reading Musicophilia right now, then rereading An Anthropologist on Mars.

I don't know if you've seen this before or would even find it interesting, but I stumbled across it while looking for information on hyperacusis/misophonia:

Thank you! I consume information like I feed my sweet tooth.

My experience with misophonia is pretty limited. The sounds I can't stand mostly involve cardboard and styrofoam.

Sadly, having perfect pitch doesn't make the tinnitus any more pleasant. You're like, "Oh GREAT! A fucking A again." And usually, it's when you're working on something in a rather unrelated key musically like F# major, or Eb, or some such. If the ringing continues for more than a few minutes, you often end up just stopping what you're doing, and go cry in the corner, or something. It's worse if you get double rings, which happens to me sometimes. One ear, one pitch, one ear, something close, but off just enough to have a discordant sound.

If you want though, you can always make a voice post humming the pitch you hear, and someone can always respond in the comments.

Double rings would have me thinking about crying in the corner! We plan to replace the offending TV with something quieter and more energy-efficient, but that's a good while off. (We don't watch it often, but Laurel loves to watch cartoons on the weekend.)

Vogon has perfect pitch so I usually ask him to identify things outside my reliable range of relative pitch. I'm good up to the E above high C before I'm shooting in the dark.
