So after my little May Day glee, I got an awful comedown today

Oh, A, I am sorry. Chickens can be very endearing, especially if you've raised them yourself. Animals will be animals, but that doesn't make things like this any easier to handle.

No kidding. M. and I had a conversation about how easy it is to anthropomorphize animals (Beckey's nickname is "little girl" after all) and that sometimes it takes a rude event like this to remind us that they're indeed animals.

We'll be getting some more but only after M. puts an electric wire around the coop. The dog needs to learn to respect the chickens, and frequent zaps on the nose is the only way that's going to happen.

Yeah, it was pretty icky. I must say that burying a bunch of young, mutilated chickens is not my idea of a good way to spend the afternoon.
