Planning to do the Earth Hour thing tonight, not because I believe it'll make some sort of instant difference to the state of the world or anything like that, but it's a bit of an experiment to see how many appliances we have going at once and how well we do for an hour with no electricity. Since watching the doco "The End of Suburbia" I've been ( Read more... )

Maybe I am wrong but I thought you just had to turn off the lights and any applicances you weren't using.
We did it and you certainly notice how dark it is without the lights!!

Yup, you're right - I misread it as "turn everything off"! Glad we did though, it was really nice just spending time together by candlelight and it almost came as a shame when 9pm rolled around.

I live without lights most of the evening...I just use my LCD headlamp... Daggy but energy efficient :)

We did it too but kept on going for the remainder of the night. I had the best candlelight bubble bath with the window wide open so I could listen to the driving rain.

Granted, when I say 'remainder of the night' I doubt I made it past 10pm. My body clock was pretty quick to say: oh, no artificial light? Hey, that means it's night time and you go sleep NOW. Zzzzzz.

Yup, we went to bed about 11 tired-as, which is really surprising for a Saturday night! It was weird how quiet everything seemed without the buzz of various electronics on standby going on in the background.

I'm planning to spend more time with the TV off and just crocheting/knitting to music or reading from now on, and leave some things switched off at the wall until we need them. Plus I have stupid amounts of candles around the place just collecting dust and I should use them more - candlelight is so pretty.

candles are pretty dangerous too unless you have proper lanterns and stuff to put them in... I always prefer my old Dietz hurricane lamps, although people have told me I should get an Aladdin for indoors

Same on the candles front. Some of them I've had *since I moved to NZ* and haven't lit yet!! It was nice to light them last night.

We don't watch much TV at all... It's the computer I need to get away from. Sweet, sweet computer.

PS We rented Judge Dredd today and I thought of you. :)
