I am really digging your writing style! You do a wonderful job of capturing the characters emotions and making the readers want to reach in and help out.

As for the Bull, she's still not able to accept him as her son, so I would use 'it' to reference him until she does.

Thank you! I always torture myself about how a character should feel, so it's nice to get some validation.

In reference to the pronouns, I think you're right. As an animal, the bull should be it. As a child, a he.
