Lupines! You make me sleepy

Nov 29, 2011 00:31

readingredhead requested Remus Lupin "living the life of the mind". The first is a much better answer to this prompt, but it's heavy so I tried to do a lighter version to end on (it is very silly, be warned).

1. Remus Lupin 'Living the Life of the Mind' Heavy Version, PG-13ish mature themes )

remus/sirius, drabbles, harry potter

Actual detailed comment to come later but for now just all of the love for both of these. I may actually be even more in love with the first one, even if only because it describes the academic hypocrisy and melancholy in such pointed and perfect language that the beautiful aptness of description does a lot to make me forget how hard it can be to live through that kind of thing on a daily basis!

Please please be more in love with the first one. The second is just a piece of fluff, you know what they say about food--leave on a sweet note! Also I like making up fake academic paper topics :D

I LOVE THAT FIRST ONE also the second but the first is just stunning. Resonates a bit uncomfortably in many places, especially with regards to minorities in certain subjects. But the real elegance of it is how that is never the focus, it's all more on his own isolation rather than primarily some grand sweeping statement about social justice and that makes both themes all the more powerful.

Sometimes he thinks he will go mad with it, the great cochlea of it all spiraling, crushing him under the weight of printing presses, painstakingly inked illuminated manuscripts, and slabs of bluestone carved thousands of years before with hammer and chisel by the light of a torch.

^COCHLEA

I also love how your own knowledge of the library and place shines through. Sooo pretty and I don't even really care for HP fic, etc.

ALSO CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING YOUR APPS DONE ♥ ♥ ♥ I just finished my GREs and will join soon hopefully.

I feel like I've edited it 500 times and still it sounds weird and bulky in some places. I'm sure some of my graduate school cynicism and frustration leaked through on to the page (really I am very excited for graduate school) and all the strange notions of weak objectivity and the possibility of real life applicability that I considered while deciding to do research. As far as Remus goes I found it very...worrying that he was unable to hold down a job in the books, like very worrying. Of course there's the whole aspect of recovering from Horrible Werewolf Time but I feel like Rowling hinted at that dark prejudicial side of the English Wizarding landscape and, of course, never tackled it.

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO USE MORE WORDS D: GRE's! Oh horrible, I am so glad you finished! I am excited to do writing time with you again <3

The first one! Love the way you framed it and played with the structure some. And I am enjoying the little literary references you have snuck into the two, though I will never get over the awkward shudder from Milton's "milking" comment.

Of course! Gotta put that English degree to work amusing other english majors. Milton in RL was weird, I can only imagine there must be so much eyeroll from those daughters.

God, I love the way you captured all of it!
Firstly Lupin's melancholic brooding, which it so characteristic I'm sure when left to his own devices, and then the interplay between the Marauder's and his response despite his best efforts to the smarmy yet well-loved Sirius. <3 <3 <3

Haha! Old broody Remus is only superseded by young and in love 1970's Remus and that is a very tricky era to deal with. From the version of Remus JKR describes in the early books I've always been like Teacher! Academic! and somehow he is not so I wanted to get into that a bit.

LOLL Sirius and Smarmy should be the first entry for each other in the thesaurus, well maybe horribly smarmy :D
