The city that rocks the city that never sleeps

After hearing "We Built This City" by Starship used in The Muppets (quite possibly the most random use of a song in anything Muppet-related, by the way, and that's counting the soundtrack of Muppets from Space), I remembered that I've always wondered what city, if any, it's actually about. So I did some digging, and apparently it's... San Francisco ( Read more... )

I think it should have been London

Also now that I think about it, San Francisco was briefly the scene for psychedelic rock and hippies in the 60's wasn't it?

That's true. And since Starship started out as Jefferson Airplane, they would have been right in the thick of that. Granted, I don't know how much of it actually had an impact on the sort of rock music that was around by the time they recorded that song, but it makes sense that they'd pay tribute to their own roots.

Was the song played by Eighties Robot? The bot itself was random enough.

I was unaware of Frisco's music history, but Wikipedia acknowledges an important aspect to it. And geographic proximity hardly matters for radio waves.
