So, poring over old music videos on YouTube, I couldn't help but notice that almost all the comments were screeds against the modern popular music scene, while lauding the songs in question with comments along the lines of "that was REAL music!" I've come to realize that some "classic" songs I enjoy would've annoyed me if I were in my 20s when they came out. Madonna would've been Lady Gaga to me, and Paula Abdul might've been Britney Spears. I would've predicted that their songs would be mostly forgotten in 20 years.

Then again, music videos may have made a big difference in my appreciation. Michael Jackson wouldn't have been half as popular at his peak if we never saw him dance. And that's putting aside the more colorful thematic visual elements.
