What are you planning to make for the bake-off? I think the first of those photos would be fine. You don't have to look like a 20-year-old supermodel - in fact, I think that would be exactly what they don't want. You look like a "real person", someone who's been busy living life while baking delicious treats :-)
I'm very sorry to hear that you totalled the car, but at least you're more or less okay. Having a "date night" with your husband is very important! In the past year or two we've been trying to do something like that whenever possible. The Senior Discount Day at the local movie theaters helps a lot, but sometimes we just go and have a nice dinner that I don't have to cook. And once in a while we visit our son and his wife (they live in NYC now), and go out to dinner with them; of all the wonderful places to eat in their neighborhood, the one that I like best is an Australian pub with a phenomenal chef :-)
Haven't really decided what my 'audition' piece will be for Bake Off. Been binge watching the British Show to get a feel for the format and what maybe I need to practice between now and May. And I can see what get a feel for what exactly I'd make for certain challenges. The trick (and why the practice) is they're timed challenges. OTOH.... baking in ANY kitchen that's organized, has space, doesn't involve me jumping over dogs, pushing cats out of the way, answering phones and.... is gonna be sooooooooo much easier. LOL!
I was kinda only kidding about the looking 52 thing, I'm just not thrilled with the squinty forehead creased look.... we'll get another photo another day - not a big deal
Our date nights rarely involve us going out anymore, they didn't always anyway - but we do try to make sure we set aside one evening a week just to hang out together - a nice meal and we'll take it and go have a picnic in bed with the big screen TV and a movie there - it's better than the theatre - we can canoodle LOL!
Well, I've long since come to the conclusion that there's no such thing as "enough counter space" (or even just "enough horizontal surfaces"), and I follow my mother's tradition of keeping infrequently-used pots and pans under the bed in the spare bedroom. Even getting my kitchen completely refurbished after Superstorm Sandy - all new appliances and all new cabinets, with granite countertops - didn't necessarily improve things; I wound up with less counter space, and I've had to buy all sorts of minor pieces of furniture to store things in.
Basically, my question was, "Bread? Pastry? Cake? Cookies? Pie? None of the above?" (I went out and bought Baking With Julia after you posted the picture of the Danish pastry with pastry cream and apricots, arranged to look like two sunny-side-up eggs.) Right now I've got a batch of dough rising in the refrigerator for the Italian "meat bread" my husband takes to work every day, and I'm also working on an epic birthday cake for an old friend, whose party is this Sunday (I'm going to try to make
( ... )
I'm thinking probably pastry.... as my cake decorating needs practice - it's my one Achilles heel - lack of hand skills - so I cheat a bit when it comes to decorating.
Bread whilst wonderful seems a bit ... plain for an audition piece, cookies - nah.... I think pastry maybe a brioche or danish based pastry would be the way to go.
So far what I'm doing is watching all the old episodes of The Great British Bake Off for ideas on what I need to practice / try / bone up on....
