I heard back from the contractors - even if Western Bay does sell, there's no way we could afford, or at least justify affording $30,000 to do the fences.

For that price we could buy a used Dingo with an auger which would be the right tool for the job (I'd hope). Of course it'd still take us far too much work, and far too long to do it. The dingo ( Read more... )

If only you could hire an anthropomorphic dingo with an auger.

Can you rent the auger for a bit of DIY here and there now and then?

Not sure where you are or if thats an option... (Out here on the west coast, folks can rent anything. And do. Which is a bit scary when considering that includes major sized power equipment...)

you can rent em here, but for 200+ post holes through rock and tree roots a) some places won't rent if you have rocks bigger than baseballs (?) and b) the time it would take us to do the job would pay for the tool

Wow. When my friends put in posts to fence off several acres, they rented an auger. I don't recall how many posts they put in, but it didn't take more than a day to drill the holes. (More than that to do the fence, obviously!) They must've had much better ground for it.

true, and this is often the case... accept in Newfoundland.

To dig a 2ft hole for a 4ft fence post means dealing with rocks bigger than a 2 man gas powered auger can handle, and even with a dingo (if they had one here for rent - which I haven't found), it's a long hellishly labourious process involving shovels and pick axes and clearing rocks. The excavator is a good tool for the job, but there's a lot of places here that it just won't go (we have a 6 metre drop off at the back of the property)

Dynamite perhaps? It'd be quicker...

I had no idea they had domesticated dingoes, especially ones well trained enough to use an auger. I think it would be worth every penny if you're a fan of wild dogs.

ROFL!

I suspect the Newf would do a better job of it :)
