Not that I'm any fan of Halliburton, but it seems that they were treating this as "gray water" and had bottled water available for drinking. That's standard military operating procedure for untreated water not known to be dangerously contaminated. Carter is right that there should have been general notification of the fact the water was gray water, but other than that I don't see anything especially alarming in this.

I personally wouldn't want to brush my teeth, bathe, or make coffee with "gray water". But maybe it is safer then I think.

I know here in California some government facilities use "gray water" for toilet water and watering the lawn. Besides that I am not really sure what they use it for.

Well, the fact that a top level guy resigned over the issue, and that the levels were 2 TIMES the levels of the Euphrates (which is itself terribly polluted), seemed to me that this is not just a normal case of grey water. Because of the levels and type of contamination, using it for washing up or making coffee was totally unacceptable. As Granger mentioned, chlorination would not be enough to fix this.

I think the fact that there were numerous problems and that nothing was done to rectify it, and that it involved both troops and civilian workers is also noteworthy. Especially since Halliburton has been given such favored status over there, and they certainly could afford to do more to keep our folks safe.

In any case, I just hate to think of folks getting sick needlessly over there (and ending up coming home with unexplained illnesses that can last for years), what with all the other stressors and dangers they are exposed to daily.
