Garbage

Brian is in DC at the antiwar protest. I wish I could be there too. But, alas. I look forward to the day when we can bring the kids with us and go as a family. Today has not begun well, either. It's getting so I willingly spend more to get things I expect to last. Exhibit A is my Smartwool socks collection. Sport socks from Target should not develop holes within a month. I'd knit all my own if I were faster. I figure by the time I'm about fifty, I'll have everything all set.

I hope things improve at home today. Next time, you go, and make Brian cope with the kids!

In Montreal all the garbage was put out on the wide sidewalks on the front of the street. If anything was in good condition, you simply put it seperate from your garbage. People would put boxes of books out on the front, and others would paw through it and take what they wanted. Then anything left would go with the garbage or recycling. There were metal-collectors who gathered up any scrap metal. There was a guy who lived a couple of blocks from us who collected, fixed and sold used bikes ($20 a bike). Any furniture would be looked over and taken by people. If someone felt what they had still had some value, they'd chain it to their front deck or fence with a sign saying the price. People would sell freezers and dresser and all sorts of things that way. It wasn't exactly beautiful, but hey... it seemed to work ( ... )
