Day Seven: In Shangri-La

Feb 07, 2012 23:09

Ugh. Today was looong. So my post today is a little shorter than I would have liked. (I wasted over four hours this evening trying to watch the first hour of the first episode of the second season of Downton Abbey. Buffering was an issue. -_-)

Red had fallen asleep on the couch while waiting for Grace to finish. He woke quickly when Grace shook him by the shoulder.

"I've done all I can," he said. "I don't know if it's enough, though."

He yawned then, and Red saw how tired he looked. He glanced at the wall clock: it was midmorning, and they'd arrived in suffocating darkness.

"I'll watch him," said Red. "You get a little rest, before you have to go to work."

A thought struck him then.

"You don't have anybody coming over, do you?" said Red.

"Don't be a dummy," said Grace. "I moved my afternoon guy: we're meeting at his. And anyway, your guy's not laid out on the table anymore. I moved him to the guest room."

"He's not my guy," said Red. "I hardly know him."

"Then why'd you bring him here?" said Grace.

Red didn't know what to say.

Grace beamed at him.

"Reminds me of when I met Jennings," he said. "Couldn't say why I liked him, but he made me feel warm, like he was the sun, shining just for me."

"Jennings was a total prick," said Red.

"Is," said Grace. "Is. Unless there's a body, he's alive."

He ducked the half-hearted punch Grace threw at him. He deserved it, really, for talking about a guy who'd disappeared two years ago, shortly after he'd met the two of them. Jennings was the guy who'd taught Grace everything he knew about doctoring, and Red felt he should be grateful for that, even if Jennings had been the biggest jerkwad he'd ever met.

Red held up his hands in surrender.

"Okay, kid," he said. "You win. Now get some sleep."

Grace nodded, yawned, and left the room.

Red waited a few minutes, until he heard the thump of Grace's door closing, before he went to check on Wells.
