Had idly wanted for a few years to vid A Single Man because I loved both the book and the film, but what finally dragged me back in was reading about Tom Ford and Richard Buckley finally getting married after 27 years together, and this article, and sort of subconsciously mapping that onto the relationship in A Single Man, and becoming very emotional with all things Tom Ford. Buckley made a cameo appearance in one clip, which made it into the vid, obvi. Ford also put Christopher Isherwood’s partner in the same clip, which I thought was rather beautiful.
Plus, it’s Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult and the fucking High Priest Of Gucci. Come on.
The central idea can feel very emotionally… cheap? If the passage of time isn’t conveyed adequately, which I always find problematic with vidding anyway. One thing I tried very hard was not to make Kenny seem some sort of Jim replacement - which he emphatically isn’t in the film or the book - but it’s difficult to communicate the idea with a naked Nicolas Hoult out of context. On the other hand, think I may have over-corrected and lost sight of the original message. Mea maxima culpa.
Anyway, the challenge theme is “gift”. I think the gift might be life. Or life with Jim. Or possibly life after Jim. Or maybe death? You can tell that I’ve really thought it through.
