the fourth wall 2009 winners announced

Mar 16, 2010 13:40

Results, awards, and in-depth reviews have just been posted at The Fourth Wall, the annual vid awards site I co-judge with bradcpu.

This was perhaps the most competitive, difficult-to-judge round we've had in the site's three years of existence. We take pride in limiting the number of categories and honorees to add weight to to the awards. Nevertheless, we added a new category this year, Achievement In Mood, to address what we felt was an area of vidding that wasn't being properly rewarded under the old format. Still, some truly excellent vids fell through the cracks.

My personal highlights of the 2009 round are behind the cut. As per prior year, we're skipping the vids that have won awards as we have provided detailed reviews available on the site.

All of these vids can be found on the entries page. And of course check out the winners and the lovely award graphics by thedothatgirl.

Recs posted in the order of submission for ease of navigation down the page. :)

Above and Below by counteragent, Supernatural
Extremely astute parallels with beautifully tender undertones.

Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect by kuwdora, Heroes
Comprehensive and insightful Sylar character study.

Is there a doctor in the House? by Mélanie, House
Ridiculously shiny and upbeat: fun tiems In da House!

Chaos Theory by Balistik, apocalypse movies
Gorgeous musicality and fantastic energy.

Rebellion (Lies, lies) by Mithborien, Supernatural
It's painful how accurately this vid has its finger on the pulse of the Sam/Dean dynamic.

Come In Closer by Liv Niggle, Supernatural/Lost/Merlin
Gorgeous colours and musicality.

Waking World by Di, Merlin
Hits an absolutely striking emotional register with an extremely effective narrative.

Day Carry Night by tearful eye, Criminal Minds
Insightful character narrative with gorgeous flow.

All These Things That I Have Done by Martouf Marty, Rang De Basanti
Absolutely fantastic emotional core offset by excellent visual energy.

bradcpu has posted additional recs with some of his personal favorites among the vids that didn't receive awards. Again, though, the quality was incredibly high across the board.

Hope everyone enjoys the vids, and thank you for another great round! We look forward to seeing what you have in store for us in 2010.
