Ugh. So many things have been happening and I haven't been writing at all. I only don't feel like going over every everything that's been happening, because October has been an insane month so far. So many good, bad, and awful and amazing things ( Read more... )

LET'S BE GYM BUDDIES. Remind me to print out my schedule to give them.

I... am so glad you said that about With The Dark. And that verse. Because, like:

I'm getting tired of all my nautical dreams
I'm getting tired of all my nautical themes
Bustin' my pirate hump
Rockin' my peg-leg stump
My mind naturally turns to taxidermy
To taxidermy, yeah

Yeah, nautical dreams, piratey things, great. But the whole "mind naturally turns to taxidermy" thing? It strikes me as one of those "LOL IM BEING SO RANDEM" things that just make my teeth itch. Like "monkeys" or "cheese" or "penguins." Mmmrgh. Mrghhrgh. Rgh.

At least they made the other albums, which are a bit less deliberate and a bit more natural. And we can still listen to those and feel lovely.

Maybe he means like, a stuffed parrot? And like, when I think "nautical" I don't automatically assume pirates. I think more like...yachts. And boats. And the navy.

But yeah, just that they have to say it twice, too. Like, "didn't you catch us being clever?"

it's no secret that i only like 10% of the else, but i couldn't quite figure out why. you're right, some of it really sounds like they're trying to hard and it comes across as forced.

although i disagree with you about withered hope. i think it's amazing. XD

I like the music in Withered Hope. I like it when they play it live, but I'm like "um, who the fuck likes what's it's butt now?" But again, maybe that's just me being too critical and being a dick.

While I don't agree with you on all of the individual songs you mentioned (I like "With The Dark" and "Withered Hope," am fine with "Bird Of The Bee Of The Moth" although I don't love it, and tend not to pay much attention to "Careful What You Pack"), I DO agree on what you seem to think is the main problem with The Else in general, i.e., that it sounds like they put too much effort into sounding like themselves. The weird stuff on the earlier albums sounded more natural and less forced, you know?

Switch out Contrecoup and We Live in a Dump. Dump is such a better song, and deserved to be on the album more than Coutrecoup did, which was to fufill that radio host's bet.

DEFINITELY. While not a bad song, "Contrecoup" really doesn't sound like it belongs on the album. "Dump," on the other hand, is Flansy's best song since "Damn Good Times."

Which I don't really mind, because they destroyed us poor Phillies.

I think that's because I didn't wear red on the day that Mayor Street told us to. Sorry about that. :P

I just think Bird Bee could be better if it weren't for the damn kaoss pad. I guess I just hate that damn pad. It sounds so out of place and ridiculous on the album.

Well Dump was like, co-written by Chris Anderson, right? I love that motherfucker so freaking much. Aka we need more shit by the Last Car but that is a side rant.

Also I think Careful what you pack is like if Ant didn't have the bombasticness of it. Which like, I like Ant just the way ti is, but I love soft/sad TMBG. It's a weakness of mine.

Like, shit, isn't Damn Good Times one of the best songs ever??

And way to go on the red, pal. Actually, it doesn't matter. Philly doesn't need anyone's help in sucking. We are terriffic at it.

I don't mind the Kaoss Pad, but Linnell uses it way too much these days. But then, I guess he's the kind of guy who likes to play around a lot with whatever his new musical toy is, sort of like how he used the band organ a whole lot on State Songs. It disappoints me that so little of their newer stuff uses accordion.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Chris co-wrote "Dump." Robin mentioned at a concert last year that there will probably be a Last Car album someday, but they weren't hurrying or anything. That's assuming the band doesn't break up prematurely, like Chris's last band did.

I agree with you about a lot of what you said about The Else.

Since I heard Bee Bird Moth first live, I loved it. And then I was really disappointed in the studio version because of that damned Kaoss pad. But, the music is certainly Linnell through and through and does certain things to me. Ditto Withered Hope's music. Although I see what you mean about Linnell's lyrics being forced to be Linnellian.

Pack and Shadow don't do anything for me and I sometimes think Flans tries too hard.

So, I have to say that I will probably listen to The Else about a third as much as The Spine.
