Well fruit and flowers aren't able to live by themselves. They can be maintained, but you can't really say they are 'alive'. Like amputating an arm or a leg - if it were possible to maintain blood flow to the limb, you could keep it in a healthy state for a while, but you wouldn't really say the limb was alive. You could say the individual cells of the arm were living still, but the limb is not alive. And when do you say that the limb is 'dead'? When every single cell has expired? The majority? I think the distinction is between 'living' and 'alive'. Not necessarily the same thing.
