A curious part of the street toy business is the sale of dolls, and especially that odd branch of it, doll's-eye making. There are only two persons following this business in London, and by the most intelligent of these I was furnished with the following curious information:-

I sent it to one of my friends, and now we've decided to somehow include a glass-eye maker into our novel.

In that case i'd really recommend the "highlights edition" of that book (IE way shorter and more concise), Mayhew's London (PDF at http://www.archive.org/details/mayhewslondonbei00mayhuoft) - it's about the "street poor", sure, but it might help with vernacular, etc.
