I am sad that Katarra and Sokka are so white, but everyone else looks cool.
OMG, you too? XD Even so, it does look like a pretty sweet movie, effects-wise. I'm worried that they're going to make Aang all emo. >_< He is so not...
I love How to Train Your Dragon beyond all reason -- it was like the anti-Avatar, with glorious flying sequences, but also with an actually good and interesting plot.
Almost my favorite part was how much attention they paid to aeronatuics while Hiccup is learning how to fly with Toothless. And how much like real teenagers all the kids are, with none of them being villainized -- there are no evil characters at all, which is nicely refreshing.
There has to be an easier way to shorten the title than "HTTYD."
But yeah, I love this movie! One of my favorite parts was the fact that there were no villains-- there were people with opposing ideas, but they all had reasonable motivation for thinking that way.
...I heard that Avatar seemed to be trying to overwhelm viewers with graphics to distract them from a predictable plot. Haven't seen it yet, though >_>
I've heard Avatar described as "Dances with Ferngully Smurfs in Space, the Disney's Pocahontis Remix," which is pretty much the best summary of its plot I've encountered. The basic premise is "colonizing white guy goes native, saves native people by turning on other white dudes, becomes the native people's leader, also environmentalism is good and destroying the environment is bad and all military personel are evil incarnate. Noble savage stereotypes ahoy!" The film's script writers never missed an opportunity to make the most predictable or cliched storytelling choice possible, which is a shame, because with a good story to back up the pretty visuals, it would have been spectacular.
So the title I heard was "Ferngully Dances With Wolves In Space" but your title is much better XD
I do wish that people would actually put thought into how other cultures function, instead of just inserting stereotypes. (Having just taken a Native Art History class, the whole "Noble Savage" thing makes me want to cry)

I know what you mean. The posters in the theater today caused me physical pain, because it looks so awsome, and I want a kickass movie where all the characters are slightly older and the treatment is just slightly more serious/epic/adult so badly and yet... I'm so strongly visual that I was bothered a little just by RDJ having brown eyes in Iron Man, and it took me half of Casino Royale before I could really think of Daniel Craig as Bond because James Bond does not have blond hair -- and that's a significantly smaller difference than being white instead of Native American/Asian. I know I won't be able to get past the characters all looking so wrong, even if the racefail aspect of that wasn't strong enough to make me feel like I ought to avoid it just on principle (even the actor for Zuko throws me a bit, honestly, because while he's at least not white and a thousand times better as an actor than Jesse McCartney, the original pick for the character, he
( ... )
I think that if I was more familiar with Avatar: The Last Airbender, I'd be more than just mildly annoyed (I've only seen the first 2 eps). I totally get your frustration with brown-eyed, RDJ!Tony. I mean, when the Harry Potter movies first came out, I was furious that they made Harry blue-eyed (and gave him a blue Weasley sweater! WTF??). The physical pain thing? I totally get that.
And I still can't think of Craig as Bond, even though I enjoyed the first movie.
(A Persia analog would be awesome-- they have such great armor and architecture! :D)
I really like RDJ as Tony, but I'd like him evenmore if they'd stuck blue or grey contacts on him (I can understand leaving Harry's eyes blue in HP despite the green eyes being such a big deal in the books, though, because apparently the actor was allergic to contact lenses and CGIing them green would have been ridiculously expensive for such a small detail).
Prince of Persia = another movie that pains me. Because it's an action crack movie about ancient Persia, but the actor they've cast is about the least Iranian-looking guy ever short of casting a freckled redhead. But on the other hand, it has Ben Kingsley in it. I may end up seeing it just for him.
Did not realize the contact allergy thing. That makes it a little better, but honestly? I'd rather they'd just re-cast the role. Not like Daniel Radcliffe really knows how to act, anyway.
Prince of Persia doesn't actually bother me so much, because I know a bunch Iranians (my aunt married into a huge Iranian family) and a lot of them are almost as white as I am. I think it comes from the days when Persia was a huge effing empire-- you had all sorts of races mixed up, so they don't often fit the Middle East stereotype. So I can suspend my disbelief in this regard XD
oh mans i have been strooongly considering going to see that movie. maybe i will C: ahahaha YES KARATE KID. YES. freaking lovvvvveeee the little kid. god. little black kids are SO FUCKING CUTE rkhgasfajshgak stfu it's TRUE. gdi i forgot how much i wanted to see it. XDD

Also, Toothless was adorableness incarnate.
