I will never let you fall
I'll stand up with you forever
I'll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven
Claire didn't really expect anything to happen that night at homecoming except for a minor fight with Jackie in the girl's locker room.
Later, when the lights blacked out, Claire felt that something wasn't right. Then, there he was, hidden by shadows. He didn't know he was there for her but Claire figured that out quickly and ran from the locker room.
Covered in her own blood, she collided with her angel again in the hall way. She was still in shock as he told her to run, and he stayed back, fighting off Jackie's murderer.
He found her again out by the amphitheater and told her to run. She didn't want him to die. She came back and as soon as she saw him, he sat up, literally fixing his broken legs back into place. Zach had seen her do that but it was odd even for her to see someone else doing it.
And she realized that he was like her.
That gave her hope.

She hated hiding even though for the past couple of months, she hid her ability from her dad and her family. That night when her dad drove her home, she told him about her ability and he promised her not to worry anymore and that he would take care of everything. Claire had no idea that meant having the Haitian erase her memory.
But he didn't and that further complicated things because now, she was forced to pretend she didn't remember anything. The Haitian told her that her father ordered him to wipe her memory but also noted that it was important for her to remember.
Claire wanted to ask why but thought better of it because more than anything, she didn’t want to forget Peter. She couldn’t.

This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
The Company found out about her after the hostage incident with Ted Sprague and Matt Parkman. She was so angry with her dad for all the lies, she refused to see that everything he had done - all of it was to protect her from the Company.
Still, that didn’t stop her grabbing the Haitian's passport and ditch plans for Canada in favor of going to New York to find Peter.
Fate had brought him to Union Wells that homecoming night and if Peter was in trouble, Claire needed to save him.
She didn’t believe in fairy tales but after meeting Peter, she stopped seeing herself as a freak and accepted her ability. Peter helped her do that.
She didn’t know anything about him, his life before showing up at Union Wells, and his family or if he had a girlfriend but that didn’t matter to Claire. Although secretly, she wished that he didn’t have a girlfriend and maybe if he saw her again, he would fall in love with her.
It was a silly fantasy she convinced herself. Besides, he was old enough to be her uncle.

Fate sucked or at least had a twisted sense of humor, Claire decided after meeting the grandmother she never knew she had. She had always been curious about her biological family, about her father and if she had any siblings or aunts and uncles...but now, it felt like her perfect world was crashing around her.
All because Peter is her uncle.
She didn't know; he didn't even know about her but still...none of it seemed right she thought as she looked over the family photographs in the Petrelli mansion.
Worse yet, even after finding out their familiar connection - the crush that she thought would go away - still lingered.

If I don't say this now I will surely break
As I'm leaving the one I want to take
Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait
My heart has started to separate
The world could possibly be ending soon but the only person Claire can think of is Peter. Her whole purpose for running away to New York was to find him. Now, that she did and was united with her biological father, she wished that she didn't continue to have this burning desire to tell him how she felt.
She didn't understand what was happening but everything was tied back to her. 'Save the cheerleader, save the world.' How was she supposed to save the world with a gun pointed at the man she loves?
“There's no sign of him,” Peter shrugged, walking towards her. Claire sighed, her heart breaking as she looked at him. “What's wrong?”
She wanted to say what was on her mind but how could she explain how she felt?
“I'm not normal. I tried to pretend that I was and I just hurt everyone. My mom, my dad. I ruined everything because of what I am. I hated it,” she cried, smiling a sad smile, “But you...when I met you I finally felt like I was part of something,”
Peter grinned. “It's funny. Felt the same thing when I met you,” he said, brushing her tears away.

This could break my heart or save me
Nothing's real
Until you let go completely
So here I go with all my thoughts I've been saving
So here I go with all my fears weighing on me
She never wanted it to come to this but she refused to let Peter become responsible for the death and destruction of half of New York. The future was not written in stone.
Peter saved her once upon time in Texas, now it was her turn to save him.
She made it to Kirby Plaza and found her dad, lying on the ground with a broken arm but forcing his other hand to steady enough for a clear shot in Peter's direction. She went to him, glancing back in Peter's direction and then to her dad before going over to Peter, taking out the gun he had given her.
Claire almost couldn't see him because of the radiation but as he turned around, her heart sank. She could see the bones in his skin, the paleness of his skin, and the sad expression on his face. No more hope.
It broke her heart. In that moment, three words popped into her head. She wanted to run to him and whisper them once in his ear but it was too late for that now.
“Do it. Do it. You're the only one, Claire,”
She doesn't want this to be the only way. Claire knew it was her destiny to save Peter but this was not the way she envisioned saving New York, or him.
“Tell me there's another way, please!” she cried.
“Shoot me. There is no other way.” he resolved.
Claire blinked again, tightening her grip on the gun. She really didn't want it to be this way but if there was no other option...Suddenly, there was Nathan. He didn't have to show up - Claire wasn't even sure if her speech at his headquarters would convince him that his mother was wrong.
“Yes, there is, Claire. The future isn't written in stone,” he soothed, putting down her gun.

Her grandmother is a firm believer in fate and destiny. But Claire believes in creating your own destiny, even if your life story has been painted in comic books and on display for the entire world to see. No one is gullible enough to believe that comic books are real.
Still, three years later, the events depicted on Isaac's canvases haunt her. It isn't because everyone can see into her life but because of what the canvases fail to show: her still undying love for her uncle.
That is one tragic story she can never share.
Peter still doesn't know and she hopes he never knows because she refuses to drag him down with her. He deserves better than that.
Claire decides to wait instead. She can and she will - because of her ability. Still, in her dreams, she remembers that fateful homecoming night when she accidentally ran into him and that night in Kirby Plaza when she realized what she had known all along: she loves him.
