Oxford Horrors

So, we went to Oxford last month to visit the Pitt Rivers Collection at the Oxford Museum of Natural History. It was quite a trek from Derbyshire, but it was worth the journey! Lieutenant-General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers(!) was this archaeologist and collector of everything, in 1884 he donated 20,000 items to the museum...and boy is ( Read more... )

How lovely! I was in Oxford for a day last winter and loved it. I have photos of a lot of the same things, see?

Haha! Oh, your chap looks far more jolly than mine! It's a wonderful place isn't it? :D

Yes, I know! I couldn't believe it when they all started moving! It was the red eyes that really frightened me though! Horrifying!

It is!

So creepy! I thought "That isn't so bad... *click play* OH NO THE EYES!"

I like the picture of Daniel, too. It's a fair approximation!

I've really never seen so much weird stuff under one roof! The flies horrified and intrigued me at the same time!

Oh my god you are my HERO! You always have brilliant adventures!! You make me want to get a camera, just looking at all these amazing photos, so that i too could have adventures with photographic evidence!! Also, many exclamation marks!! Seriously, this place looks phenomenal. My mouth was hanging open before i was halfway through, and when i got to the video of the creepy little creepythings, my jaw hit the floor. I looked like Hugh Laurie in my icon! This place is AMAZING! I must go! I want to comment on nearly every photo, there are so many incredible things. The parade of skeletons! The :D crocodile! (That was my favorite bit of commentary, btw. Very understated, deliciously apropos.) The SHRUNKEN HEADS!! EEP!! The honky-nose masks!! You should absolutely papier-mache them and put them on your wall. Seriously!

Also, Prince Albert was a real looker. I see why Victoria got all 'rowr!' about him!

Also, is it pathetic that i know who Daniel Faraday is, despite never having watched the show? I blame you!

Ah, knew i'd forget something. That photo you thought was your best ever? Too right! Completely gorgeous! You should submit it to a contest or something!

Oh this is the most brilliant comment I could've hoped for, thank you so much! <333333333333333

I take my camera everywhere with me, my bag is always weighed down with stuff! Honestly, it was the best museum I've ever been too. I felt a little bad, because we went there for Jim's birthday and I hardly said a word to him, I was just running around the place on my own going 'oh my God!' at everything. The creepy little creepythings were well worth £1!

I know, I felt the same about Prince Albert. I think it was Prince Albert, although he seemed a little out of place. Oh dear. Googling 'Prince Albert' just then may have been a mistake :-O. Worth it in the end though. He's like Errol Flynn!

Ohhhhhhh Errol Flynn. You may have been a perv and a wino in real life, but you're dead now, and so i can watch you on screen and drool over how pretty you are.

Thank you for bringing him up! I am now going to watch The Adventures of Robin Hood while i compile a witch's costume.

I can't believe i don't have an Errol Flynn icon! I'll have to use Olivier, whom i also adore.

Fun!! I love museum picture posts; it's a poorman's version of going oneself. Also, I think you would be very fun to go to a museum with!

I love museums because they are crammed with interesting things, but it can be so overwhelming and there is no possible way to absorb everything in one visit, and I kind of hate that.

I'm so glad you liked the photos :D. Ahh what a lovely thing you say, thank you so much! I don't think I was much fun in this one, I was too excited, just dashing around on my own with my mouth wide open!

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. We spent nearly a whole day in the British Museum and didn't even get halfway around it! There's no way you could see everything in this one, it was bursting at the seams!
