“Harry, how was your date?” Blythe asked peering curiously over his shoulder as she rushed to catch up to him and Ron.
Harry, who was conjuring images for Ron from the night before, slowed a bit so that she could catch up. “It was nice.” He stopped for a moment before opening his mouth, hesitating again before he started to speak. “Well…it was awkward. Hermione and I are great as friends but…”
“Not so much as romantic partners?”
Harry gave her a small relieved smile. “Right. Glad you can read my mind.”
Blythe smiled at him cheekily with a sparkle in her jet black eyes. She was known for her uncanny ability to succeed at the task of painlessly reading minds. Most people who cast that sort of spell couldn’t manage to peek into the minds of their peers without making the receiver of such a prying spell wince with pain. Blythe, though, known around school as the bronze-skinned black-haired twin of Hermione Granger, knew just the right amounts of ‘swishing’ and ‘flicking’ needed to execute even some of the toughest spells flawlessly and stealthily. Even Professor Snape marveled at her mastery of technique. He certainly didn’t hesitate to demonstrate his envy with the close and narrowed eye he kept on her and the points he made up reasons to deduct from Gryffindor.
“You two snuck into the Great Hall?” Ron asked, his face twisted with surprise as he examined the image floating before him. He wasn’t nearly as shocked that someone would sneak into the Great Hall as he was that Harry managed to get straight-laced Hermione to break the rules.
A breeze blew some of his ginger-colored locks away from his face as the trio approached a shady spot in the grass beneath a strong old tree, where they sat.
Harry nodded. “Well, she said she had always dreamed of her first date being a candlelit dinner.”
“You couldn’t think of someplace less…mundane?”
Ron chimed in. “Yeah. I mean we see the Great Hall everyday.”
“Sure we do, but it’s different when it’s just two people.”
Blythe shrugged. “I guess.” She sighed and sprawled out on the grass, looking up at the partially cloudy sky. Then she closed her eyes. She soon heard someone sigh and plop down beside her. Cracking one eye open, she spotted slightly frizzy brown wavy hair. She closed her eyes again. “What’s wrong Hermione?”
“Exams, that’s what’s wrong. How exactly are we supposed to study if they keep giving us so many assignments?”
Ron rolled his eyes. “Haven’t you started studying like twenty years ago Hermione?”
She sat up and shot Ron a nasty look. “You’re just jealous that I am passing all my classes. Perhaps if you spent less time being so rude and more time studying, you’d be passing Snape’s class.”
Ron just stuck his tongue out at her and blew a raspberry.
“Hermione, you’ll do fine. You’re brilliant. Don’t you agree, Harry?”
Hearing the cheeky smile in Blythe’s tone made Hermione blush and avoid eye contact with the boy who was her date the previous evening. She didn’t look up at him until he responded.
“Yeah, I…I do. You’re brilliant Hermione.”
She looked up at him just long enough to meet his eyes with her own.
“I know you’ll do great.”
She smiled. “Thanks Harry.”
Harry averted his eyes and watched a beetle crawl around on a blade of grass as he took a moment to think. His heart had leapt a bit when she smiled at him, even though he had just finished talking about how awkward the two of them were as a couple. “Hermione?”
“Yes?” She perked up.
“Would you like to go on another date with me?”
Ron scrunched his face up with confusion and looked over at Blythe, who was still lazing in the grass with her eyes closed and a knowing smile on her face.
Blythe hummed. “Ron, I think we have something to go do, yes?”
“What? We don’t -“
“Yes we do♪!” She sang. Sitting up and opening her eyes slowly, she extended a hand to him. “Come on.”
Ron took her hand with great skepticism. “O…K?”
The two of them walked away hand -in-hand leaving Harry and Hermione to discuss their budding romance in private.
