When the cake splashed onto the ground, the class grew a little quiet as everyone stared at the small mess.
Tao calmly walked over it and went to the fridge in the back. "Um, let's have you… here, a spare cake." Tao said considerately, Luhan tilted his head in defeat and accepted it.
After Tao gives his instruction, the class continues on. Tao side-eyes the other and meets his eyes about chance, he gives a small smile in return. Tao then returns to give his rounds to the other tables as Luhan inwardly smiles back and looks down at the spare cake. Tao always had to have one in stock for him with his luck.
They're all left in their own small groups and Luhan looks over his shoulder often, stealing glances at the teacher who walks around and offers bits of advice.
"Xiumin's returning to take over the class." He hears Chen say.
"Oh, he's finally back?"
Luhan listens to his group's conversation and it dampers his mood a bit. He was enjoying these classes a bit more now he was there. Slightly better, he accidentally ruins the side of his buttercream covered cake. Luhan pouts when he hears a quiet chuckle.
"Don't be so disheartened," Tao says, already helping to place the plates of frozen flowers they've made the night before. Tao reaches for the triangular comb and helps to smooth the dent, moving the cake on its turntable. Luhan's sure he's supposed to be studying from his mentor, but he's too distracted to bother.
And when they're done, the class is welcomed to cut into their respective cakes if they'd like to eat. Luhan looks for a box when his greedy friend reaches over and Luhan smacks it away.
"Keep your hands off! I worked hard on this."
"You mean you're going to keep it as a souvenir." Chen snidely.
Luhan does nothing to deny the knowing accusation, his crush was practically known to his entire group, everyone except the subject of his affection.
When the class eventually comes to its close, the class is dismissed except for one. Tao's used to it though and turns to see Luhan still behind the counter. The scattered icing roses were scattered around him, Luhan holds one up and tugs at the outside petals to snack on.
Tao comes to his table and leans across the counter, "Should you really be eating those? You could use some to place on the dents, helps to cover the mistakes we make."
Luhan shakes his head and eats another, one petal at a time. "I'm just glad this class isn't for a grade. Although I'm not sure it's quite enriching the experience either like the course description suggested." He slowly chews it over and looks down at the small rose, "Are you really going to leave?"
Tao is a bit hesitant about that answer, "Yes."
"Oh," Luhan murmurs simply. "Instead of substituting, don't you think you'd like to stay long-term?"
"Think I'm a good teacher?" Tao asks lightly. Before Luhan can answer, they both turn to see the door open and walks in Xiumin.
"Wait, class is already out?" Xiumin checks his watch. "Oh right, time change." He groans and waves to Tao, "Be right back."
Luhan switches his gaze from the door to the other and asks eagerly, "Are you sure you won't schedule another class?"
"Unfortunately, no. I have my own business to go back to, I feel odd with just leaving them alone already. Wedding cakes is a business I can't neglect."
Luhan gives a reluctant nod. "How unfortunate, I'd take them all if I could."
Tao smiled, "You must really be passionate about cakes."
"I definitely am, looking at them at least. And actually," he fiddled with a smooth petal between his fingers. The two vaguely looked back as Xiumin returned to the room and just continued going about his work as Luhan bit his lip. Time was already running out. Tao brought out a box and helped to pack his finished cake.
Luhan then said hesitantly, "I saw your work and wondered if maybe you could make a sketch?"
Tao shifted his eyes, "Are you getting married?" He says a bit downcast.
Luhan instantly denied it, "Not for me! My sister is, I'm-I'm definitely single. I don't think I'll be seeing that path soon anyhow."
Tao then grinned and all evidence of his slumber mood disappears instantly, "No problem then."
Luhan keeps the petal at the edge of his lips, holding a particular glint as he eats it in triumphant. And when Luhan grabs the strings of the box and holds it by his side, prepared to leave, he looks Tao straight in the eyes as they're near the door.
"We could talk about it now, if you're okay with it."
Tao thinks it over and looks apologetic. "I'm already keeping you so late, I don't want to inconvenience you."
Luhan pursed his lips. "Well then, I hope we see each other soon enough then," and gives him a bright goodbye and walks out with the best smile he could muster. When he turns around, there's an obvious frown on Luhan's face as he steps out.
Tao continues watching the door when he hears Xiumin's question.
"How'd it all go for you?"
"Great," Tao smiled, finally tearing away with the former student still in mind. "The students were all great, eager to learn. A real difference since they actually wanted to be here, glad you persuaded me to do it."
"Mmm," Xiumin says and Tao's doubting the man's really listening. His friend then sets his bag down and adds offhandedly, "By the way, that was your hint."
Tao blinked. "Eh?"
Xiumin gestures to the now empty table. "I'll give you a few minutes to think it over. Putting two and two together was always something you took a little longer at."
Tao draws a blank and slowly widens his eyes in realization. Xiumin snickers at how painfully inept his friend could be and observes as Tao trips a bit when rushing to the door.
Tao pauses when he sees Luhan pacing just outside the classroom.
"Oh, I was, I was going to ask for your cell number in case my sister wanted to call." Luhan tries to explain himself.
"We could talk it over now if you want," Tao offers shyly, hoping Xiumin wasn't wrong.
Luhan beamed, "Sure," he agrees right away. Tao returns to class to grab his bag,
By the end of this class, Luhan’s skills as a baker were more than likely never to be fulfilled, and he was fine with that. With where things were heading, he was walking away with a lot more than just one little cake.
