Jaejoong wasn’t sure how many flights of stairs he had ran that day. First the airport’s, the lanes and the rush through the rain to find an empty cab. It feels as if his legs are about to give out on him at any moment.
The ride home is almost therapeutic. After such a long flight, he takes a bit of time to collect himself.
“You okay?” The taxi driver asks kindly to the passenger.
Jaejoong is almost startled and quickly nods. “Great.” He awkwardly replies. He looks out the windows and exhales, unconsciously turning the ring on his finger.
With his bag hitting against his legs as he hurries to a high floor of the building, he has his keys ready and steps inside.
There’s silence in the apartment. Jaejoong scans around as he sets his bag by the doorway, taking off his shoes as he walks to the barely opened room. The door creaks as he opens it further, and in his line of vision, sees Yunho sitting in the corner.
Jaejoong sees the faint light above him stray across the other’s sleeping face, and he wears a sheepish smile. He had to have been exhausted.
Yunho soon stirs awake and looks up, eyes curved in delight. “Welcome home,” he murmurs pleasantly. Jaejoong just nods, happy to see him, but looks crestfallen just the same. Pangs of guilt so visible on his face that Yunho stands up.
“We didn’t know.”
“This isn’t a good start for me!” Jaejoong whispers crossly, although hushed. Yunho reaches for a small spare towel that’s tossed over his chair and gently dabs his damp cheeks. Jaejoong lowers his eyes, “I should have been here from the beginning, and I’m already screwing things up.”
“You are not.” Yunho corrects and finishes. Jaejoong closes his eyes as Yunho places a considerate hand on his shoulder. “That was why you left, right? To wrap up everything abroad and now that everything’s said and done, you can stay here.”
He reminds the man of every reason they agreed to this. Yunho knew it was justified for the long term, Jaejoong was still beating himself up over the decision.
Jaejoong’s frown relaxes when Yunho grabs his cooled hand, giving a gentle squeeze. His downcast eyes remain on the floor, Yunho brings him over just a few steps to their right.
Jaejoong’s a little cautious. Yunho knows he was too.
“Maybe we shouldn’t,” Jaejoong says instantly, holding back his outstretched hand. Their gazes lock for a moment, and Jaejoong feels a little more at ease, withdrawing his hand to his side.
He clutches the ends of his blazer when Yunho straightens up and turns around.
And in Yunho’s arms, was a baby.
The first thing he does is take off his drenched blazer and tosses it to the floor without a care for it's worth. Jaejoong clears his throat when Yunho closes their distance as he walks from the crib, hesitant, Jaejoong lifts his own arms and mimics what Yunho is doing.
The baby sleepily laid in his hold. He’s so embraced in excitement, he says the first thought that comes to mind.
“She doesn’t really look like you,” Jaejoong mumbles and Yunho just laughs. “Maybe she will, in a few weeks, or months, right? That’s what all the books say.”
Yunho just tilts his head and ruffles Jaejoong’s hair. Jaejoong had read enough books to make him an expert, but now with her in his arms, he felt unprepared.
His worries are laid out like an open book, he’s thankful when Yunho comes by and leans his head against his.
“You’ll make a great father,” Yunho encourages and presses his lips against his forehead.
Their baby stirs in his arms and he tenses as Yunho walks him through.
Their surrogate wasn’t meant for another three weeks, had Jaejoong known, he’d have been here for sure.
The baby hasn’t yet to cry, and when she opens her eyes, chords struck in his chest. Jaejoong is overwhelmed with glee.
Finally, their daughter was home.
