Summary: A forensic accountant who realizes something he wasn't suppose to. Now he's forced to run and ends up in the reluctant arms of a rookie cop who’s clearly in way over his head.
-
Why did he have a knack for numbers? Why of all things he had to be good at, it had to be math?
He wished beyond anything he never noticed that inconsistency, he regretted ever becoming an accountant, going through all those years of studying and cramming just for this.
Because instead of a reasonable and hefty salary for his services, there was now a gun aimed at his face.
"I swear I won't tell anyone." Yesung pleads, he should have known something was shady about this company. All the signs pointed to it, but did he listen? Clearly not.
"That's not good enough for us." The assailant utters, his finger dangerously close to the trigger and Yesung's heart feels like its stopping with every inch.
"We'll leave you to it, Jay." The other said as he left the room, the man called Jay said nothing.
Yesung continued to plead but none of them seemed to faze the man. He heard a soft knock on the door and Jay ignored it. The looming seconds worsened when the persistent knocking finally annoyed the cold man.
"What is it?" His grip tightened on the weapon.
Yesung wasn't sure whether he should keep an eye out, but couldn't quite close his eyes either. His senses heightened as he heard the door barely opened when an almost condescending voice said, "You're lucky, the cops are here."
Jay widened his eyes and stared back at the door, Yesung held his breath, completely terrified that his untimely death could occur quicker than he thought it would. Yet when the door closed, Jay, to Yesung's surprise, put away his gun and ran for it.
This was his chance. He made a break for it.
He made sure to avoid any gaze from the scurrying members, running as quick as he could the moment he made it outside. His pace never relenting when he was suddenly pulled into an alley.
Before he could yell, a man in a coat covered his mouth and shushed him.
"I'm Kyuhyun, I'm a cop." Kyuhyun assures, he gave a quick look around and reached for Yesung's hand as they hurried quietly in another direction.
Yesung kept an eye out for a hint of the men after him, asking after a few minutes. "Where's your car?" His eyes looked at any sign of a white vehicle.
Kyuhyun pursed his lips, pulling something out of his pocket and showed it to the man. Giving a proud smile as he held the recorder out. "I knew police sirens would come in handy one day."
"...Why don't you have a police car?"
"Well, the last one sort of... met a ditch. But I didn't see it! Anyhow, I-"
"I don't need your life story!"
"Well I-"
"THERE HE IS!"
Momentarily distracted, Yesung turned around and gulped to see a few men from the crew, Kyuhyun and him bolted down the alley and turned a quick corner. He followed him to Yesung's beat up car and hurried inside as they drove on, the tires squealing.
All was well, for a bit. But to Yesung's horror, a few cars were tailing right behind, they both jumped at the sound of gunshots their way.
"Where's the gun?" Yesung asked out loud.
"The what?"
Yesung managed to find it in the glove compartment of the car and pulled it out. "Okay, I'll drive, you shoot."
Kyuhyun widened his eyes as Yesung reached for the wheel. "I can't."
"Why not?" He asked hotly.
Kyuhyun gulped as he explained in a quiet voice, more gunshots were fired their way. Yesung widened his eyes at his meek confession.
"What do you mean you never used a gun?!"
"I'm a cop in training!"
"Dear God, my life is in the hands of some mall cop." Kyuhyun tightened his grip on the wheel as they made a sharp turn. "Then why did you help me?!"
"I saw you running for help and thought I could at least drive them away from you, I didn't think it would go this far." He said reluctantly, making another sharp turn.
"So you basically decided to play hero?" Yesung cursed under his breath as he looked back, noting that for the mean time, they weren't being followed. "I knew you were too cute to be a real cop."
Kyuhyun blinked, smiling awkwardly as Yesung paid no attention to him. "I'm flattered."
"Don't be." Yesung said as he held the gun out the window and aimed carefully, the trigger pressed. Kyuhyun watched through the mirror as one of the car's tires went out behind them.
"That's better aim than I have."
"...I'm becoming less surprised by you."
He focused his stare at the car zooming in closer, the bullet only grazed the car's mirrors. The second shot aimed successfully at the tires as the car began to lose control.
Yesung sighed as he leaned back against the chair, closing his eyes as they continued on.
"Where do you want me to drop you off at?" Kyuhyun asked hesitantly, looking back at the exhausted man.
Yesung peered through his tired eyes out the window. "Just keep driving... I don't think they'll let me go yet."
By the time dawn broke, Kyuhyun waited beside the car as Yesung came out of the gas station with a bag in his hand. They soon returned to the open road, looking at the hints of an approaching city, deciding for the meantime to stick by him.
"Where should we go?"
"I'll tell you when to stop." Yesung said as he pulled out the change of clothes in the bag and took off his shirt.
Kyuhyun turns to ask, "Left or ri-Do you always work out?"
"Focus on the road!"
-
Yesung wasn't too sure what city they were in as he opens his eyes at some gas station, having just refilled the gas tank.
"Where are we?" He asks groggily, he then sits up right and quickly scans around.
"I don't think anyone's following us, I checked." Kyuhyun assures as he sits inside the car.
"I need to call my unit and update them, do you have a cell?" At Kyuhyun's apologetic look, Yesung sighs and rumples through the car for spare change for the pay phone. "What sort of person doesn't have a cellphone?"
"You don't either." Kyuhyun murmurs, slumping in the seat when he gestures his small bag of treats.
"I could have sworn... You bought all that with our change, didn't you?"
Kyuhyun slowly withdrew his unwrapped treat and gestured it to him, Yesung slapped his head. "What is wrong with you! Notifying the police should be step one for you!"
"Well..."
"That's your answer for everything, isn't it?" Yesung grunted while moving his hand aside from the center. "Wait, I think I might have some spare cash in here."
"Oh, I used it all on the gas."
"..."
"Well, we couldn't drive far if we didn't refill- You're hurting my hand. Hurting."
Yesung finally lets go and grumbles loudly. "I need alcohol."
"But we have no money." Kyuhyun spoke frankly, Yesung glared quite menacingly in his direction and the younger quickly stepped out and murmured hastily. "Right, right, breaking the law under duress, that's step 3 right?"
-
It had been four days since the two were on the run.
Cooped up in a small motel room, Yesung sat on the floor and flipped through the channels as Kyuhyun returned with a bag in his hand. He scrunched up his nose as he looked around.
"I don't think it's that bad, although I don't think they cleaned the white chalk enough." Kyuhyun murmured, staring at a questionable outline on the green carpet. "Maybe we can-"
Yesung shushed him.
Kyuhyun glared. "I am trying to having a healthy conversation-"
"Be quiet and watch." Yesung said, gesturing to the television.
"An anonymous tip to the police has led to the sting operation last night, arresting over twenty leaders of the Red Dragon group, often associated with the Lau family. Police are..."
Yesung gave a huge sigh of relief, life for the most part seemed easier now. He heard a pop sound and turned around to see Kyuhyun open a wine bottle.
Yesung arched an eyebrow. "I thought you didn't drink?"
"I don't, but I thought it fit the occasion." He grinned cheekily, Yesung crawled over and joined him.
Celebrations aside, Kyuhyun continually glanced at Yesung as the other's stare remained on the news.
"So... Are you single or?"
Yesung gave a slanted glance, lowering his eyes in the process as he reached for the wine bottle and gulped a bit down.
"No thanks, I don't date law enforcement."
"Oh." Rather than feeling dejected, he seemed a little too excited. "That's great!"
"Why?" Yesung asked absentmindedly.
"Because I was rejected from the academy!"
Minutes of silence passed.
"You...You were rejected...?"
"Yup."
Kyuhyun barely dodged the wine bottle that smashed on the wall. Unfazed, he asks-
"Do I take that as a yes?"
