Kangin leaned against the wall as he waited outside the doors, soon enough people began filing out and that man did as well. Kangin shook his head disapprovingly as Yesung walked towards him, he looked... bored.
"What did the judge sentence you to?"
Yesung gave a slight shrug as he flipped his hair. "Community service."
Kangin heaved a huge sigh of relief. "At least that's all you got, vandalism could have gotten you a lot more-"
"They're not going to waste tax dollars to send me to jail, they've already wasted enough just to charge me." He said nonchalantly, Kangin narrowed his eyes.
"Your laid back attitude is really starting to piss me off." He shook his head as he walked alongside Yesung from out the courthouse. Yesung tuned out most of Kangin's lectures and advice, he was focused on playing songs in his head from memory. Kangin seemed to noticed this and smacked him upside the head. "Did it ever occur to you just how lucky you are?"
"Yes."
"Then why did you do it?"
"Cause I thought my luck would keep me out of trouble again... seems I lost a bit of it." Kangin took a deep breath, he wanted to knock some sense into his troublemaker of a friend but decided that would be best saved for another time.
Yesung honestly didn't see why his actions were so wrong, but he was uncaring to most things. He didn't know what his own intentions were exactly, he just decided on impulse to spray paint that police car. Was he aware that there were security cameras from the supermarket nearby that recorded his crime? Not at all, but he didn't care even when the cops arrived.
The next time someone from the court house did arrive was in person to his own house, he cringed immediately. Not from the exact punishment he would receive, but from the fact that Kangin was there. Meaning any chance of him skipping his community service was now down the drain.
He tried to plead for Kangin to ignore the knocks on the door. "Please, don't do it. I swear I'll do anything-"
"Is anyone here?" The person outside asked, Kangin took another step towards it.
"Kangin!" Yesung whispered fiercely. "Don't answer-"
"Yes." Yesung dropped his head into his hands and hid immediately as Kangin opened the door.
"Is Yesung here?" The person asked, Kangin looked from the corner of his eyes towards Yesung.
"Say no. Just say no I beg of you." He mouthed.
Kangin looked straight into the person's eyes and said. "Yes, he is." Yesung smacked himself on the head.
That day he realized he was assigned to a random park. Now his now former best friend gladly drove Yesung to said park in the early morning hours and told him he'd be by later. Yesung sighed as he slowly headed towards the plants; apparently the park wanted some renovation and he was now the perfect candidate to start gardening to his dismay.
He wiped his forehead as he pulled out another rock that were in his way, he was not finding this as therapeutic as other people have stated it was. He fell backwards as he pulled another one, he sat up and lowered his head onto his knees. He wasn't enjoying this one bit.
The fog hovered over the empty park, an unnatural eerie silence around him. At one point the only thing he was able to hear were his own breaths when he heard something else. He recognized the distant sounds of a violin playing.
He furrowed his eyebrows, out of his own curiosity and lack of wanting to continue his work, he threw his gloves onto the ground and followed the sound. He finally reached where it was coming from, he stayed a good distance away as he watched the man play his piece.
Yesung closed his eyes as he listened to each note, he was not a particular fan of classical music but he enjoyed it nonetheless. He was disappointed when the song ended much too soon to his liking.
He opened his eyes and glanced at the man who had his own eyes set on him. It startled him at first but he calmed his quickened heart, he told himself it was probably better to start off with some simple conversation.
"What were you playing?" He asked as he walked towards the man.
"Meditation by Jules Massenet." He answered as he prepared his violin. Yesung chose to stay silent as he played his next piece, he recognized it by the name Ave Maria. He stood close enough to noticed a symbol on his violin, there etched onto the front was a small butterfly.
The man suddenly stopped playing in the middle of his piece and placed it in his bag. Yesung furrowed his eyebrows.
"Why did you stop?" The man returned a puzzled look.
"I don't necessarily have to tell a complete stranger, do I?" Yesung opened his mouth but closed it, he had a point. He didn't comment as the man grabbed onto the handle of his case and started walking away.
Yesung pursed his lips and didn't hold back his question. "What's your name?" He called out, he watched as the man paused momentarily, he didn't look back at all.
"Henry." He said just loud enough for him to hear, he continued walking off. Yesung nodded to himself as he burned the name to his memory.
The next morning Kangin was surprised to see Yesung already waiting by the door, usually he had to drag him out of his bed, but he drove him nonetheless to his destination.
Yesung continued his work when he heard the violin begin once again. He was anticipating their next meeting and nearly ran to see him again. He made sure to slow down a bit and maintained some bit of composure when he stood beside Henry again.
"You're here again?" Henry asked in surprise.
"Is that a problem?"
"Yes." Yesung was slightly taken aback. "Well, I practice this early because no one's around, you're sort of ruining this for me."
Yesung huffed. "I apologize."
"No need, but thank you otherwise." Henry said with a mischievous smile. Yesung narrowed his eyes. He played another piece that laid on a calming hand on Yesung's anger, but as soon as it was finished it just as quickly returned.
"You're not that amazing of a player." Yesung said spitefully, Henry chuckled.
"I know I'm not."
Yesung bit his lip. "I lied, you are that good." Henry laughed again.
"Make up your mind, am I good or not?" Henry began to put his violin away. Yesung tilted his head in thought.
"It depends on my mood." He stated, Henry sighed as he looked up and held the handle. He took a step towards him and ruffled Yesung's hair. Yesung reached for his wrist and pulled it away. "Don't do that."
"Aw, how cute." Yesung glared.
"You're the one with the puffy cheeks, you're obviously cuter than I am." Yesung corrected.
Henry smirked. "So you admit I'm cute?" Yesung froze, realizing what he just walked himself into. Henry maintained his smile as he walked past the still contemplating Yesung.
The next morning Henry was surprised to see Yesung already there waiting for him. Yesung barely had on one glove in his hand when he crossed his arms. "Yes you are cute, however, your personality is absolutely deviant."
"Yours isn't so pleasant either." Henry pointed out, Yesung opened his mouth to protest when Henry played his song.
The two found themselves used to their conversations that stretched and continued on for days. Henry would always play two pieces every morning and Yesung would spend longer hours than he originally intended just to talk to him.
Yesung arrived slightly later than usual, due to Kangin's car battery suddenly deciding to die, and ran as fast as he could to their usual spot. He was shocked to find that Henry wasn't there, he waited a bit more but no sign of him. He kicked the ground, upset that maybe he had just missed him. He dragged his feet to the current garden he was fixing when he noted the violin case gently placed beside the tree.
Yesung widened his eyes at Henry who was planting flowers. He paused, looked up and smiled. "You know you owe me right?" Yesung smiled.
"You chose to do it out of your own free will, I owe you nothing." Yesung sat down beside him and helped to continue their work. After two hours of planting, both Henry and Yesung sat adjacent to each other beside the tree.
Yesung shifted himself slightly to look at the job that was nearly done when he felt Henry lean against him. They were back to back as Henry closed his eyes.
"I'm not a chair." Yesung said.
Henry smirked. "Not a comfortable one, but I'll take it until someone better comes along."
Yesung narrowed his eyes. "There is no one better than me."
"There will always be someone better than you." Henry stated. "I just have to look."
Yesung lowered his eyes as he crossed his legs. "If you found what you already wanted, you don't have to look any further."
"What if I want to?" Henry asked, teasing Yesung was becoming quite a hobby of his.
Yesung pursed his lips. "If you do find another person better than me, then I'll just become better than him. Simple as that."
"Yes, how simple-minded of you." Henry laughed as Yesung held himself back from turning around. They stayed like for a while as Henry rested, Yesung glanced at his violin case.
"Why a butterfly?" He asked.
"It was a gift." He breathed out. "From a very special person." Yesung felt his heart tightened, Henry noticed his silence and smiled. "It's not what you think."
"How would you know what I think..." Yesung grumbled.
Henry turned slightly and leaned against his shoulder. "It was a gift from my grandmother, that's my special person." He laughed when he heard Yesung's sigh of relief. "Seems you've taken a liking to me."
"I have not." Yesung retorted, he felt Henry suddenly get up and walked towards his violin case. "Going home already?"
"People are going to start jogging through, I'd rather leave before the commotion." With that Henry waved him off. Yesung smiled, already looking forward to tomorrow morning.
He didn't realize how fast time flew when Kangin took out a case of beer in his honor. Yesung was confused when Kangin gave him a congratulatory look. "You're officially done, all you have to do is sign a few forms tomorrow morning and you're done." He patted Yesung's shoulder in approval.
Yesung however felt slightly bitter, he now had no legitimate excuse to going there. But he shook his head, he could still go there in those early hours, there was no stopping him. He laughed to himself, thinking of what Henry might possibly say when Yesung missed tomorrow's meeting. He already imagined the scenarios and couldn't wait to return the following day after his sentence was now complete.
Yesung drove himself to the park the next day, and waited by Henry's usual spot. He repeatedly glanced at his watch and waited... and waited...
He didn't see Henry at all that morning, nor the next. He was there every morning for three weeks straight and there was no sign of Henry. Yesung was worried, what if something had happened to him?
Yesung collapsed onto the rock pavement. He never bothered to ask for his email, phone number, any other way to contact him. He somehow never figured that Henry would one day disappear just like that. If he had known that their previous encounter was going to be their last meeting, he would've told him the truth. He would have paused their playful bickering and actually tell him of his own true feelings.
For once he actually cared about someone, and now it disappeared before he even realized it.
Yesung started to work again, this time not getting himself involved with anything that might cause him potential trouble with the law. Though the looming thought crept in occassionally and he wondered if he was served community service as before, would there be a chance he'd meet Henry again? He tried to stop himself from feeling hopeful that there would be another chance.
He was just a memory, and that was it.
---
Yesung tried to go for a morning drive when his car acted up, he pulled over and walked towards the hood of his car when he realized where he was. He decided to forgo fixing his car and walked into the familiar paths of the park. He looked at his former planting grounds and smiled when he saw flowers that took their place there.
He felt a lump in his throat when he recognized one particular place, the one where he had last saw Henry. He looked back onto the sidewalk and recalled Henry's waving hand as he walked away.
He shook his head away from those thoughts but the memories continued to flourish. He looked down one path and decided to take it, it was the very one that first led him to meet Henry in the first place. He sighed to himself as the surrounding silence overtook him, when something made him stop in his place.
He heard the violin.
He wasn't sure when he started running, but he knew he had to hurry or else this second chance might truly be his last. The song began to play its last verse when it ended, he felt his own body's limitations as he had to stop and catch his breath. He closed his eyes, worried that this was really a figment of his imagination. But he had to know, he forced his eyes open and looked up.
He froze when he recognized the butterfly etched violin.
Henry turned around and lowered his eyes. "You're late."
"I was busy." Yesung said as he straightened himself up, still trying to catch his breath. "And you? What's your excuse?"
"I was preoccupied too." Yesung lowered his eyes, Henry lowered his violin, he began to explain. "I went to study abroad for a bit...I was going to tell you the next day but you weren't there." He gave a bitter smile. "I hoped you would be around when I returned but no sign of you whatsoever. How loyal."
"I was loyal." Yesung declared as he walked towards him. "But studying abroad? That was it? Here I was worried sick that maybe-" He stopped himself when Henry raised his eyebrows at him.
"You were worried?"
"Shush."
"How adorable." Yesung crossed his arms.
"I am not adorable."
"You're right, you're not, but I am."
"That's right-wait! That's not what I meant." Yesung glared at him as Henry continued to laugh. Yesung then bit his lip. "I think we should exchange phone numbers... its a lot more convenient that way."
"I don't give away my phone number to strangers." Yesung narrowed his eyes.
"We're a lot more to each other than just strangers."
"Says who?" Henry maintained his smile as Yesung took his hand and interlocked their hands.
"Says me." Yesung declared, Henry smiled as he looked at their hands.
"I'll give you that...for the time being." Henry laughed even more as Yesung reached around his shoulders and held him rather possessively. Yesung didn't dare to let him go even as Henry struggled to put away his violin. He didn't let go of him when they walked back to his car, nor when he had to call Kangin to come over to pick them up.
Kangin shook his head but smiled nonetheless as he looked in his rear view mirror, he watched as the two slept against each other in the back seat, both perfectly content and at peace.
