Two bad habits I engage in when I'm by myself: I eat too fast, and I talk audibly to myself in a stream-of-consciousness manner that would probably get me regarded as insane if I did it out on the street. Both are bad because they're signs of a lack of adequate regulation, one in terms of what I'm putting into me and the other terms of what's ( Read more... )

What about with hand foods, pizza, fruit, etc?

Also, good call on the chopstick in the mouth, i'll have to try that. (I once carried on an entire, quite intriguing, conversation with myself)

Haha, I'd love to witness this!

I talk to myself often. Children talk to themselves out loud as a form of executive regulation. Talking to yourself can help regulate/guide/narrate your thoughts...but yeah, in the context of a social sphere it might get you some weird looks and be regarded as inadequate regulation if you do it out loud ;) I'd like to think that my mind is still child-like, supple, creative, flexible...and as a consequence does child-like things sometimes ;)

I'm reminded of the George Carlin skit about "things we have in common." He says something like: "Have you ever been talking to yourself, and then someone comes in the room and catches you, and you pretend you were singing to yourself? And you hope the other person believes there's really a song called 'What Does She Think I Am, Some Kind of Putz'?"

Are you familiar with psychological neoteny?

nyuanshin had a related discussion earlier: people whose minds are not supple will be left in the dust as there is increasing automation.

Don't wanna help it if the thoughts inside my head are so many that they just sort of bubble out my mouth (hmmm, that sounds kind of gross, actually.)

Since I moved to LA, doing the latter has ceased to make me stand out much.
