Eric likes to call me a "stealth Mexican" since he maintains that my ethnic heritage is not immediately apparent from my looks. I guess that's true enough, since folks back home usually thought I was either white or half Asian; out here I'm often taken for Hawaiian or another sort of Pacific Islander. A lot of people who are racist don't even know they are racist. They and their familiars have been thinking and acting that way for so long they think it is perfectly normal. It doesn't even occur to them that their thinking is wrong.

So good for you. What you did might have rocked this woman's boat a little. She needed it.

Were you raised Jewish? I have been wondering about that.

You're probably right about rocking the boat; the folks I've told this story to seem to be in agreement with you.

And no, I wasn't raised Jewish; I'm a convert. It's kind of a weird story; ever since I was a little kid and long before I ever met any Jews that I know about, I had this idea that I wanted to be Jewish. My mom says I told her when I was six that I wanted to be Jewish and to live in either New York or California. So it's nice to know that I've met at least some of the goals I set for my life. :p
