I think people do use facebook/twitter much more - but its not the same thing. You get a very different sense from someone's facebook than you do from lj

I've been struggling to find the right words to comment on some of your posts lately.
I'd like to meet up some time. I have been thinking of you lately, and that we haven't seen each other for quite a while. Either coffee or a visit to your new house would be great.
I also see the value in 'oh dear' and 'well done'. I recognise that not everyone does, and that sometimes people assume that saying something so short is not valuable to the person on the receiving end.
Where I know someone would appreciate comments I will try and make them spoons-depending as I know sometimes a "aww shucks that is a bit shite, thinking of you mate" can help people when they feel very isolated or whatever.
I have been so spoons short that reading has been hard and commenting much more so but if you'd like comments even if they are largely connect-absent and supportive this is a thing I can *try* and do.

I like comments like 'well done', 'you like [thing]? I also like [thing]'. I sometimes appreciate comments like 'that sounds really difficult'.

Although I desire comments, I don't need them. Feel free to comment only when you have the inclination and the spoons to do so. Thanks.
