Any chance you could contact her adoptive parents and possibly write letters to her?

This is already set up as a thing that's part of the semi-closed adoption. I haven't written to her in a couple of years though, it's too hard and I just don't know what to say. According to the social worker, Alex probably doesn't read them anyway, so it's a frustrating exercise.
