I think I need to back up my journal*. I am not reacting like the title of my post, but if LiveJournal falls apart I really do want archives of stuff that I've written over the last three years, plus a new place to go. But is there anywhere as good as LJ? I like the networking aspect of it, the ability to friends-lock posts, the having a list of ( Read more... )

Try this - it's fast and effective. If paranoid, change your password to something temporary while doing it, then change it back:

Yeah, it's handy. Then depending on the size you can consider printing it out and/or putting it elsewhere online, like FTPing it to web space, or if it's not too big, emailing it to a Gmail account - then you can access it anywhere.

It's not falling apart just yet.

They've scrapped the basic account for new people (have kept the plus free account with adverts) but didn't tell people in the news post; there was the whole kerfuffle with all sorts of journals getting deleted a while back in the great strikethrough of 07 (many of which were pretty innocent ones and didn't have paedophilic content); probably other stuff too. A friend of mine thinks that the more commercial LJ gets the more it's likely to fall apart.

I have a paid account and will continue to as long as I am happy with the service that I personally get.

Wow, good new icon! I like it! :)

I am not quite sure how to backup LJ but i know it is possible. LiveJournal has a feature somewhere. I also know that Wordpress has the ability to import whatever the thing is that LiveJournal exports for you. I heartily recommend wordpress.com for ease of use and networking, being free, quickto get started, and not plaguing you with ads.

I have a feeling that LiveJournal/SUP is playing things completely the wrong way, and the tide is turning now. It has been turning for a long time but it feels like it's getting close to critical mass. A few more idiotic stunts like this and LJ could drown in the backlash of negative publicity.

I know LJ is really important to you, so stick with it whilst it works for you, but you are definitely wise to be taking a backup. For all we know, LJ might be going bankrupt and not telling us. Explore your options!

The various importing systems take an XML dump from http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml - though it looks like you have to do that month by month.

I use http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/ - it's also got a very useful search function, and will also download (and search) the comments you've gotten, and export it to a couple of formats - most usefully a few HTML versions that you could upload elsewhere.

Once it's got your details, you can have it update it's copy by just opening the file.
