Summary: Draco wants to start the new year with a new beginning. For Jae's January prompt 'This year will be better'.
"Draco, what are you doing?" Harry padded down the stairs bare-footed and tousle-headed on one of the few days he was legally allowed off. He had been hoping for a lazy afternoon in and had rolled over in bed for some cuddle-time only to discover a blank spot where his partner had been last night.
"Spring cleaning," a highly preoccupied Draco Malfoy answered through a mouthful of curtain material in a tone that was both highly enthusiastic and grimly determined. He waved his wand, and suddenly there was sunlight streaming beautifully in through the window, illuminating the clouds of dust simultaneously generated as the curtains flumped to the floor.
Harry coughed in what he hoped was a mildly questioning tone. "Draco, it's barely ten o'clock on the first of January. We didn't even get to bed until after three." He paused. "And what's wrong with those curtains? I bought them."
"Exactly," Draco mouthed darkly around his bit of curtain, which was still only in his mouth because he had both hands and every available surface in the living room draped with something else already. He charmed the new curtains into place, and dusted down his robes. "I thought we could redecorate and spring clean at the same time. New curtains, carpet. Maybe a bit of the furniture and knock out some walls."
Waving his hand to clear the dust, Harry stared, wide-eyed. He wondered if this was some New Year's Resolution his boyfriend had suddenly got into his head and, more importantly, whether it was going to pass over a day or two. "Knock out some walls?" He queried, perching on the inch of armchair that wasn't stacked with books.
"Well," Draco smiled, sidling over to look down at Harry and pecking him a light kiss on the nose, "I was really only thinking of the one."
At Harry's questioning look, he gestured. Harry followed the line of Draco's finger out of the door and understood. "Oh. Grandmother Black?" The portrait still residing in Grimmauld Place had more or less disowned Draco the moment he had stepped into the house on Harry's arm; or they reckoned that she would have if she could ever manage to get the words out past her rage. The only way to get around the Permanent Sticking Charm would be to remove the entire wall.
Harry tucked his arms around Draco's dusty waist and pulled him down for a real kiss. "That sounds like a good way to start the new year," he smiled, gently stroking the pale face in front of him from cheekbone to jaw.
"This year's going to be different from last year," Draco decided firmly, defiantly pushing away some memories that didn't belong in his new life as Harry held him. "It's going to be better."
Harry murmured in agreement, before a chiming laugh dropped from his lips. "Even if it involves changing all the curtains at ten am on the first of January."
