Crime

One of those days when I really should have just stayed in bed. Kept on missing train connections both going to work and coming home again; and when I stopped for a snack in Brussels North railway station, I went to pick up my laptop after I had finished eating, and realised it was gone.

My brand new laptop, nicked.

Bastards.

Oh no! Argh! Even if you're already able to put it in a bit of perspective already, still sympathies.

Crazy(and echoing your cry of "Bastards!" Do we get to add "klootzaken" as well?)Soph

Lot's of sympathy. I've never been unfortunate enough to have my laptop robbed, but it would cause me a lot of trouble.

You're posting is a warning to keep well backed-up.

Still, lots of sympathy. Words won't help you relax but, as you say, not as bad as the gun-point incident. That sounds horrendous.

By the way, I agree. BASTARDS

Bastards. I had a gorgeous overcoat nicked at Manchester Airport once, I'd got it very cheap in a sale at Macy's a few years before ($200 for a coat that was about $800 normally) and loved the thing dearly. Had breakfast, went for a pee, got back... gone :(

I know it's no consolation but a maxim I've always lived by is a laptop is a cache - the only data that should ever be on it that's not backed up is data you've put on on that trip and haven't yet managed to put somewhere safe ( ... )

Much sympathy.

A suggestion? One of these on your keyring can really save your day. (And I just grabbed an 8Gb one on eBay for £80 including delivery -- prices are dropping fast enough that I figure they'll be under 50 quid by summer.) It contains: my life's work, my email archives, and a bunch of tools, including this as a can-opener. Copy your work to it every day before you go home and ... well, it's belt and braces.
