Worldcon question

I see Cheryl Morgan's roundup from Worldcon includes this comment: I’ve also heard a few complaints about Chris Priest. I’m not exactly happy about what happened at the Hugo ceremony myself, seeing as it was on my watch, so to speak. Hugos? Or GoH speech? akicif September 1 2005, 11:08:42 UTC
I wasn't there for either the Hugo Awards or for his GoH speech, but some of the comments after the GoH speech implied that one of the killingly funny riffs he kept repeating was to tell an anecdote about someone, while saying that of course good manners/tact/diplomacy forbade naming the person in question and then "accidentally" giving the name away a few minutes later.

That, and insufficiently worshipping Harlan Ellison....

I didn't attend the GoH speech, but Dave Langford has kindly put it on line. Sure, diehard fans of Larry Niven and Harlan Ellison might take offense; such people IMHO really ought to get a life!

Thanks for that - I missed the GoH speech by being on the BSFA stall that afternoon, and have had to make do with the recollections of others.

Langford's already recounted the Niven story from what I recall, so the only real firecracker in the speech was Ellison's Plan B (and I'm not entirely sure that I hadn't already heard before)

I was bewildered by that part of Cheryl Morgan's report as well. I can only assume that it's a reference to Chris Priest's puns on the titles of the Hugo-nominees, but to describe this as rude seems to be the result of someone deliberately intending to be offended ( ... )
