The thing on the quote is interesting. Pithy quotes have been attaching themselves to famous people since the dawn of time. The thing that has changed is not that 'the original author gets lost as the meme is transmitted' or that quotes are used creatively. Both those things are old. The thing that has changed is that we can now, quite often, track the quote all the way back to the original author. Which is just plain awesome.

I harbour hope that as we sift all the world's historical information we will be able to do some of this for the past as well.

It was very interesting to track down the real origin of the remark of the Duke of Wellington, that just because you are born in a stable, it doesn't make you a horse!
