Having gone to The Hobbit 3 last week, at F's request we watched the 2005 movie of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy last night. It's not perfect, by any means, but I like the crabs and beasts on Vogsphere, the woollen people, and other little bits that are slipped in. Some of the criticisms seemed predicated on the idea that the original script is holy writ and cannot be changed. But the movie isn't trying to provide visuals for the radio series - it's making H2G2 into a British romantic comedy, a job it does quite well.
