12) The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twenty-First Annual Collection, ed. Gardner Dozois

Of the various annual collections of sf short fiction, this is surely the best value by far. I'd read a number of these stories already while compiling my survey of this year's Hugo nominees, and one or two others from having read their original magazine ( Read more... )

Just saw your comments on my review of Sawyer's Hominids (although you don't appear to have seen my reviews of the other nominated books). I always try to be fair in my reviews and I generally try to avoid saying whether I liked or didn't like the book. I provide a synopsis and I provide a discussion of the work's strengths or weaknesses. In many cases, this is enough to determine my own opinion, but not always. I feel it does provide enough information for the reader to decide if the book is for him/her, even if they aren't too familiar with my likes and dislikes. I may, of course, be wrong.

Each to their own... I finished compiling the page in early June and so must have missed anything you put on line after that (though I should not have missed anything you put on line before). I said your review was "fair", and indeed it is. I also once had the idea of doing neutral reviews, but I find I am more comfrtable with what I write if I allow myself to get worked up one way or the other - the Celtic temperament perhaps?
