I thought that Snow taking over Scheherazade's role and telling her how to survive was a pretty textbook example of both the classic Mary Sue and cultural appropriation.

Certainly agree about cultural appropriation; not quite so sure that Mary Sue is a fair criticism, unless we think that Willingham sees himself as Snow White?

It's not Mary Sue in the pure self-insert sense, but it definitely is in the "character steals the canon role of an established character" sense.
