Actually, I meant to ask you something, how many degrees of freedom would you saying that the make up of the second round had, because I'm trying to work out if the unexpectedly good performance of the South American teams is statistically significant.

Hmm, degrees of freedom? Not sure what you mean in this case...

I would say that since there were five South American teams in the second round, and two of them were playing each other, the maximum number that could qualify for the final eight was four, and four of them did indeed qualify. And three of the four are favourites in their quarter-finals as well. If Paraguay pull off a surprise and the other matches go as expected, South America comprehensively beats the rest of the world.

For the Pearson's Chi-squared test.

Basically, from the rough numbers South America have done a lot better than expected and everyone else (except Oceania) have done a little less well than expected, and I just wanted to see if it was signficantly better.
