I read the first in this series, the multiply award-winning Take Back Plenty four years ago, and am now at last catching up with the other two. Having enjoyed the first, I found this one so tedious I have never actually read anything else by Greenland.

The classic trilogy structure is:
  • fellowship comes together for a quest but is betrayed by one of their number and the group is scattered
  • lots of people run all over the place, not really achieving anything, and putting off the climax
  • the world is saved but not for those who saved it


I can't recall how much that's a spoiler for the third volume... I do remember thinking that just because readers want more, doesn't mean getting more will be a good thing.
