I spent most of last week in bed, and finally got round to watching this great example of the Star Trek genre, which I had not seen before (I still haven't seen the third or fourth films in the series either). I don't remember the conversation in Utopia but those scenes in The End of Time II seemed like such an obvious reference to me.

Yes, those are clear references.

Wrath of Khan is possibly the best of all the Trek films (with the exception of the recent reboot film). Ricardo Montalban gets to chew scenery like nobody else can, and there's marvelous scenes and lines for almost all the members of the cast.

The third film, unlike most odd-numbered Trek films, is not abysmal. It's not as strong as this one, but in some ways I like it better than the fourth.

Do not under ANY circumstances (save, possibly, dead drunk and with nothing else to do) watch the fifth movie... if, that is, there WAS a Star Trek V, which there wasn't, any more than there was a Highlander II.

My memories of the fifth Trek film have, fortunately, been blanked out, largely due to the circumstances you describe.

As for Highlander II, as a very wise person once said: There should have been only one!!!

I won't swear to it, as I've never seen it, but I believe there's a similar scene in Stargate SG1.
